This Christmas, I am taking pen in hand and sending the kids in my life a letter (not an email or text) about life. I am writing to them about three things about their financial life that I want them to think about. Hopefully, this letter format will give them time to stop and think and reflect – critical life skills when it comes to money.
Consider penning a similar letter to your children – edit in your life experience – as YOU are the most impactful teacher in your child’s life when it comes to money.

December is a rush of emotion and frenzied activity for many of us – especially those of us with children. So much importance is placed on this one month. The “success” of the season seems to hang on whether or not we get the right gifts and enough gifts. There is real pressure on everyone and it is hard to untangle oneself from the mayhem.
Many of you know that I have two girls. Allison, my oldest, just started college. I started Money Savvy Generation when Allison was in first grade. Amanda, is about to turn 17 and is a junior in high school. I have taught them to be givers. Of course they approach every season with a list, a budget and the understanding that not all gifts are purchased. In fact, my favorite gifts sit just under my scarves in my dresser drawer – letters and coupon books from holidays gone by. Continue reading
Heard some good news last week – the Kardashian pre-paid credit card I mentioned a couple weeks ago has been pulled from the market. With all the annual fees and other costs incurred just for the privilege of owning the card, it was a bad idea from the start! On behalf of all parents of teens – I bid it good riddance!
