Early Financial Education Cover Story in ABJ

June 17, 2011by Susan BeachamNo Comments

A couple months ago American Business Journal was searching for story ideas on the latest and greatest innovative business practices, so I thought, “Why not send them our story?”.  What resulted was something better than I ever dared imagine – a cover story highlighting the importance of early financial education!  My heartfelt thanks goes to journalist Christina Bruce for a piece that makes the case for early financial education available to today’s movers and shakers to read about and consider how they too can get involved.  Here are a few highlights from this article:

ABJ-June.July2011 Cover“‘If we teach very young children, very early on, something that we have choices about—money—what we have done is help a child learn a critical life skill, and that is
the critical life skill of delayed gratification,’ says Beacham. ‘It’s just that simple.'”

“It may be moving slowly, but the winds of change are clearly blowing. When major financial institutions sink millions of dollars into educational programs and the White House becomes involved, it serves as proof that there is something to be said for teaching kids these principles. The epiphany that struck Susan Beacham so many years ago might just be the remedy for the increasingly perilous financial environment of today.”

Saying “No” to Student Loans – A True Story

June 25, 2010by Susan BeachamNo Comments

A single mom sent a note in response to my recent blog “How to say no to student loans but yes to college” and how she helped her child say “no” to student loans. It’s truly an amazing story with great tips for all of us.  Here is the approach she took:

“Hooray for your common sense approach to funding college.

When my daughter was a freshman in high school, I sat her down and told her that as a single mom who worked as a baker, I simply couldn’t afford to pay for college.  So, we worked out a plan.
